Character Backgrounds

(Ryan:)

After creating characters, before beginning play, we worked out some backgrounds for the characters. A lot of the backgrounds, particularly the things all four had in common, were provided by the DM, but the players added their own details as well.

The heroes were orphans, raised separately, with little knowledge of their birth. Rock was raised in a monastery orphanage located underground; Snow in a small university located on the edge of a vast swamp; Mistral in a mixed human and elven village in the treetops of an ancient forest; Nift in a noble’s court of a great imperial metropolis.

Though their early lives and homes were different in many ways, they did share a few common experiences:
  • Each had a jann tutor from the Al-mira tribe, who came to visit periodically.
  • Each learned the language of their element (instructed by his tutor).
  • Each manifested an elemental power at an early age. Along with the manifestation of the power, each developed a runic mark on his body which glows when he uses the power. Later, each gained a second power accompanied by a second mark.
  • Each accompanied the tutor to several gatherings known as “Festivals of the Garden”. The four met each other on these occasions. From their first meeting, they felt a strange familiarity. “You are all brothers – in a way,” one of the tutors remarked.
  • Each was given a mysterious item by the tutor and instructed to meditate on it. Eventually, this meditation had a surprising result. The item disappeared; as it did, each felt a connection forming with a distant, elementally charged place…

E-Team, Assemble! Into the Rain

Next: Session 2

Prev: Session 0

(Ryan:)

Escorted by their respective tutors, the E-Team have journeyed to Miterimas (except for Snow, who was already there). The tutors explain that it is time for them to leave the Garden for the first time. They will be journeying into the Rain, to visit the planar touchstone Snow is attuned to. Snow’s tutor, Harmon al-Miftah, will take them through the gate.

Before the group sets out, the tutors answer a few questions about the heroes’ origins.

After a fight with dire rats, the group arrives at the portal to the Plane of Water: a vortex hidden behind a frozen waterfall formed at the confluence of three rivers. To enter the vortex, the waterfall must be temporarily melted, which Nift accomplishes with his burning hands power.

On the other side of the gate, the group finds themselves on top of an enormous floating glacier. They follow a tunnel inside, encountering bickering ice and water mephits, and an aquatic ogress guard whom Nift was able to sweet talk. Finally they reach the core of the glacier and the ice halls of a huge ice paraelemental king. Snow buries some semiprecious gems in the ice floor and as a result, his touchstone power is charged. The group returns to the entrance where Harmon awaits, and the janni plane shifts them all back to Miterimas.

Dellis the Menace

Next: Session 3

Prev: Session 1

(Ryan:)

Back in Miterimas, the party’s path crosses that of Dellis, a young boy who is quite a troublemaker. After breaking up an altercation between the boy and an enraged cook, Nift decides to take him on as his page, teaching him proper manners.

Next, the party hears about a colloquium happening at the university. It was organized on short notice to announce a major discovery regarding the lost Saurite civilization. Curious, the heroes (except Rock?) attended the meeting. There, a Prof. Birdelay claimed to have found a misfiled stele in the university museum; his analysis of the stele suggested that the commonly accepted calibration of the Saurite calendar needed to be adjusted by several decades. This proclamation threw the faculty into ferocious and excited debate, but the heroes were not very impressed.

They were, however, curious about the “misfiled” stele. Investigation revealed that the stele may have been removed from the swamp only recently and planted at the museum by an unknown party.

That night, a snow storm started. The next day, Dellis’ hysterical mother sought out Nift and his friends, crying that the boy had wandered out alone in the storm. The E-Team was able to track him down in the wilds north of the village where he was being menaced by a slavering winter wolf. Springing into action, the E-Team quickly defeated the beast. During the fight, Rock sheltered the boy from the creature’s breath weapon with his own body.

The boy could not give a good explanation for why he wandered off, and a ranger from the village suggested that the winter wolf’s behavior was strange…
